Serving the Legions

The story of the Synod in Brittanis truly begins during the Tiberian Invasion, nearly 1,000 years ago. The Tiberian Empire had invaded under the leadership of Legate Honoria Ambrosius (later known as Honoria Brittania), and the Legions brought priests of the White Court with them. At this time the Synod in Caledor was barely out of hiding, and the expedition to Brittanis was considered a holy endeavor, something for a newly-resurgent faith to rally behind. The Conquest of Brittanis took far longer than anyone in the Empire could have foreseen. After the first 20 years of conquest ground on, the Synod in Caledor elected a group of priests to serve as a subordinate Synod located in Brittanis so that decisions didn't have to cross an ocean to be made. This "Little Synod" became the defacto spiritual leadership of the White Court in Brittanis-- and remains so to this day. During Honoria's lifetime, the Legions' relationship with the priests of the White Court was stable-- she honored their desire to minister to the all regardless of faith or national origin, and the Synod in Caledor supported the faithful so far from home. Until this point, relations between the Grey Council and the Synod had been cold and distant-- the Council saw the Synod as spiritual invaders intent on stamping out their faith. Considering the climate of invasion and conquest, this was unsurprising. After Honoria's death, however, the relationship between the Legions and the Synod soured, while the relationship between the Grey Council and White Court priests took a turn nobody could have expected.

The Severed Flame

After Honoria died, her command was split under the responsibility of her sub commanders. One of Honoria's 4 successors, Legate Benowic Aquilinus, pushed hard into south-central Brittanis and demanded that the Synod send him clergy to support the troops. The priests came, but when they began tending to the sick and displaced among the locals as well as the Legions, Aquilinus flew into a rage and forbade the priests from ministering to the Brynn and Norn of the south. Upon hearing this, the Brittanis Synod pulled their priests from the south entirely and sent word to the full Synod in Caledor for advice. The Caledor Synod, apart from the realities of a mixed-culture landscape for generations, sent word back to the Brittanis Synod that the Legate Benowic should be supported with all resources, and the locals of Brittanis should be converted with all haste to the True Faith-- by the sword if necessary. The Brittanis Synod sent back a simple message to Caledor: "We reflect the Light of the Flame to shine upon all who stand against the Darkness. We do not choose where the Light shines, but follow where The Light leads. The White Court came with us to Brittanis, and we shall lead the faithful here."

The Synod of Brittanis

Shortly after this,  Beowic's Legions attacked the site where the Brittanis Synod had gathered. Still in contact with the Caledor Synod, Aquilinus used his troops to try and crush the "rebel" Synod, but he failed. The Grey Council had followed the schism within the Synod closely, and When the Brittanis Synod sent their message of secession, the Merlin of that time, a man named Aethwynn apBrittanis, stepped in. He offered the Brittanis Synod sanctuary and a place to build a new Cathedral on the island of Yns Wytrin, just off the eastern coast of the mainland. Yns Wytrin had long been the most holy site of the Three Sisters, and Aethwynn offering the Synod a home there was an open sign that though the cultures may war upon one another, the religions would not. So it was when Aquilinus' legions fell upon the Brittanis Synod's gathering place, they found the full might of the Merlin and the Grey Council reinforcing the young Synod's forces, and Aquilinus' Legion was driven off. Weakened in the sight of his three competitors, it was not long before Aquilinus was assassinated and replaced. It took the relationship between the Synod and Grey Council another generation or so to fully solidify, but over the hundreds of years of the Occupation, religious tensions between the two groups have been short and only in rare instances violent.  Each group ministers to their faithful and for the most part leaves the other alone. Those who seek to convert from one to the other are celebrated, but neither religion resorts to active conversion tactics against the other.

The Fall of Yns Wytrin

In 93 AR, the Fomorians attacked. Their first major assault was upon the island of Yns Wytrin, which had been the center of religious life for something like 500 years at that point. Both the Synod and the Grey Council had their headquarters there, and their holiest of holy places, relics, and artifacts were gathered there. On the day of the Summer Solstice-- the highest holiday f the Synod calendar-- the Fomorians landed hundreds of longships and attacked. Through a single day, the Fomorians swept from one side of the island to the other, slaughtering everyone they could find. Men, women, children-- priests and lay followers and those on pilgrimage to the holy sites-- all were slain as the Fomorians caught them. Temples were torn down, holy texts burned, ancient artifacts broken and sacrificed on Fomorian altars to the Demon Princes. Both the Temple of the Three Sisters and the Cathedral of the Seven were shattered and broken, their clergy scattered where they were not slain. Centuries of documentation, revelations, prophecy and holy writing were lost on that day. Hundreds of priests were slain outright or sacrificed. The death toll was incalculable, and the long-term damage to both faiths is still unclear. Villages went years without a visit from clergy, because their local priest had been slain but no record of his death could be made. Over half the voting seats of the Synod died. Today, the Synod meets in a Church in Calderon, the capital city of albion. after the Fall of Yns Wytrin, King Uther Ambrosius offered to both the Grey Council and Synod to relocate to Calderon. The Synod accepted the offer and now the capital of Albion is also the capital of the White Court Faith. They meet within a refurbished and enlarged Church that houses both the Synod and the Patriarch's offices and meeting halls, trying to put a faith back together after tragedy.
