Information Skills

Some skills allow you to pursue answers to questions between events. These skills are tagged with the keyword "information skills" in the skill description. Each information skill has a number of in game methods that research the question and provide what answers they can. Your question is answered from that perspective and in the best manner they can pursue it. Information Skills are requested by using the Online Raven Station.  See step-by-step instructions at the end of this page. Questions/Requests:
  • When asking your questions via InfoSkill, BE CREATIVE.
  • Reference NPCs from your character's history, or those you've met in-game.
  • Tell us how your character is going about getting the information you seek.
Answers:
  • A written response via the Online Raven Station
  • A Live Raven delivered at an event (note that the Live Raven might arrive whether you attend an event or not, so it's a good idea to have someone designated to get your mail!)
  • An NPC may find you in-game to deliver some piece of knowledge related to your question.

Using Information Skills

There are 3 kinds of Information Skills: Addressed, Open, and Combination.

  • Examples of all 3 kinds of Infoskill Request are gathered at the bottom of this section, in Green.

  • Addressed Infoskills have a specific in game recipient-- a contact or group you have access to. These Infoskills must be sent to the contact you wish to gain information from. This will either be an NPC you have met/encountered/learned of in game, or one you get to create yourself as your informational contact.

    • TIP: Many players have access to specific contacts all over Brittanis; learning who your fellow players have made contact with and what their informational specialties are can be a good way to get better/more reliable information.

  • Addressed Infoskills reference a designated source, usually tied to the "flavor" of the method or class the skill is found in.

    • Example: the Scholar class has the Professional Discourse skill. Using this skill to find out details about a criminal smuggling ring wouldn’t get you very far, but using the same skill to try and research ancient history would likely be much more fruitful.

  • Addressed skills are a way to get good information in areas that fit their theme. Addressed skills will generally result in more detailed information due to their focused nature.

  • Many class-based Infoskills are Addressed skills.

  • Open info skills are in many ways the opposite of Addressed. Instead of a specific, named contact, you are using the skill to declare a more general, widespread kind of research or manner of seeking information. They allow for great freedom in how they are used.

    • Open skills gather wider, less specific categories of information that allow players to ask broad-based questions with less specific requirements. The information a character gets in return will be less focused, but casting a broader net in this manner will usually result in some kind of useful reply. All Knowledge skills are Open skills.

  • Combination skills can be used either as Addressed or Generic as you see fit.

All Infoskills have some universal rules:

  • All Infoskills require Downtime to use. If you don’t have the DT to spend, you can’t use these skills.
  • You can make ONE request for information per skill, per use. Remember: DBAD. Breaking a single request down into multiple sub-requests counts as multiple requests, not one.
  • TIP: MAKE IT EASY FOR US TO ANSWER YOU. Especially in Addressed requests, use stars (***), bold text, or some other obvious OOG identifier to let us know EXACTLY what info you are requesting. Sometimes, in the midst of a letter home to Mother, or a complex political memorandum it’s easy for us to misunderstand what you’re asking for, or miss it entirely.
  • Some skills can be used more than once by improving the skills with Character Points. These skills will specifically state such in the description.
  • After an event, there will be an announced 7 day window when Infoskills are available for use. Once this window is closed, no more Infoskills can be used till the window opens again. PC-to-PC ravens will always be available.
  • ONE Raven can be sent, for free, to your Head of House per Infoskill window. This works exactly like an Addressed Infoskill, but costs 0 DT.
    • Any other ravens will require DT and skills as normal.
    • The use of some information skills costs in-game money which is subtracted from your Bank Account. The amount of money required for the question will be detailed in the Information Skill description, and the more difficult, dangerous, or obscure the question the more expensive it will be.
  • TIP: Asking certain questions to inappropriate sources might cause in-game trouble for you. Sometimes, seeking knowledge can be dangerous.
  • It’s a totally legitimate tactic to use multiple Infoskills to research the same topic. You can get many different angles of data on a subject quickly.
  • Please be patient; it may take a while to receive a response. Submitting a question that is not appropriate for your skill dramatically reduces your chance to get an answer that is meaningful

EXAMPLES

  • ADDRESSED EXAMPLE: Write A Letter is an Addressed Infoskill. William has purchased Write A Letter, and writes the following letter (vastly shortened for example purposes): “To: Elaine of Holmsmeade, Mother of William-- Dearest Mother, I hope you are well. ***I am looking for information about your famous potoroo stew that healed people of sickness. I would like to know the recipe for that, especially any rare ingredients, please.*** Love, William
    • The example includes an IG contact (Elaine of Holmsmeade) and an obvious request (potoroo stew recipe)
  • OPEN EXAMPLE: ALL Knowledge Skills are Open skills. Duncan the Skirmisher is a Novice in Knowledge:Criminal. During an event, a question is raised about a particular poison used by some enemies. Duncan uses the Online Raven Station and submits: “I am using KN: Criminal to talk to shady herbalists, less-than-legal alchemists, smugglers, fences, and contraband dealers to research the poison used by the bandits we encountered. ***I am trying to get a lead on who sells or makes this poison.***
    • The example includes the skill used (KN: Criminal), clearly defines HOW Duncan is going about gathering the info (chatting up creepy merchants of various kinds), and an obvious request (who sells/makes the poison)
  • COMBINATION EXAMPLE: Blessings of the Faithful is a Combination Infoskill-- the user can choose to use it as an Addressed or Open skill. Siobhan the Hearthwarden runs afoul of a cult dedicated to chaos and destruction corrupting farmers and woodsmen. After the event, Siobhan can either:
    • Send a letter directly Addressed to her mentor, senior clergy of Arturian, asking about the cult and if his faith has had any dealings with them in the past.
    • Make an Open request, describing how Siobhan is speaking to the lay followers of Arturian, listening for rumors or details that sound like the cultists have been influencing her flock.

Using the Online Raven Station

The Online Raven Station (ORS) is used to send Infoskill Requests (to include Ravens sent to NPCs) and PC-to-PC Ravens. This instruction does not cover PC-to-PC Ravens. Infoskill Requests using the ORS can only be done when an Infoskill Window is announced. They will be offline otherwise. NOTE: It is *HIGHLY* recommended that you craft your Request text in a non-web-based format such as Word or Google docs to avoid any potential timeout issues when using the ORS.

To send an ADDRESSED Infoskill Request using the ORS:

  1. Log into the Brittanis Database (if you need a login, send an email titled DATABASE LOGIN to brittanis.tech@gmail.com and we’ll set one up for you).
  2. On the left hand, menu, click “Raven Station” and then “Send a Raven/Request.”
